Gift ideas you can do with your loved ones

Gifts don’t always have to be physical items, nor do they have to be brand new to be thoughtful or enjoyable. Here are our favorite gifts to give that offer something to look forward to, do or work on together. Also included are other ideas for practical physical items you may want to gift.

Travel — An Airbnb Gift Card or Reservation

A gift card is sweet because they’ll be able to put that amount toward a trip, which is thoughtful and personal even if you’re not directly involved in the booking process. See also: airline gift card.

For a significant other, a booking is a perfect gift to surprise them with: simply a trip somewhere in your state (the coast, the mountain, the river) is a cute weekend to look forward to and plan together. Another thought: surprise plane tickets for a weekend trip. Also, climate credits pair well with travel-related gifts.

Food — Airbnb Cooking Experience

A cooking class or experience in your area would be a lovely gift that offers a chance to learn and create something together.

Dinner Reservations

Surprising your s/o with reservations to a restaurant with a tasting menu is nice for a more high-end gift, but simply making a reservation at a new place that you’ve been wanting to try is just as thoughtful.

Drink — Coffee Subscription or Bag of Coffee

A subscription is a perfect way to give someone something to continually use and enjoy. You could get them a bag from your favorite shop in town, order a bag from a place you visited on a road trip or international trip, or grab a subscription for them if they’re consistently looking to try new coffees.

Wine Subscription

A gift for your s/o but also for you. This is something you can enjoy together, look forward to each month, and plan meals around: truly a gift that keeps on giving.

Self Care — Spa, Acupuncture or Sauna

The gift of some sort of spa day is quite literally the gift of relaxation. You could book this as an experience together or just for your s/o or a friend to enjoy.

Tickets — Concert or Movie Tickets

A timeless way to plan an activity together in advance.

Books

Stop into a local bookstore for a lightly used or new book. In Portland, we’re lucky to have Powell’s with endless options as well as tons of sweet local brands and trinkets. You could pick up some notebooks, coloring books, art books, books about plants, cookbooks, etc.

Home — Interior Elements

I’m big on gifting things you’ve genuinely been needing around the house (and finding the most interesting version of it!) See: Coat Hooks, Vase, Ornament, Bathmat, Salt & Pepper Shaker, Picture Frame

Vintage Goods — Cameras or Records

Stopping into local thrift or vintage stores in search of a little polaroid or point-and-shoot film camera would be cute. Grab some film and you’ve got a sweet gift to use together. Same goes for records that you’ll use at home together!

We hope you enjoy these ideas and are able to implement some of them into your gift-giving this year.
