What I Wore This Week
Outfits from the first week of December in LA
Outfits from the first week of December in LA
Dressing for early winter in LA has slowly become my favorite over the years: some days are warm enough to wear a tank top, while others call for a light sweater without overheating and needing to stop at home to change by noon. Evenings are usually a bone-chilling 52ºF, lol, and are finally the time and place for the scarves and lined jackets that have been collecting dust in my storage unit. With holiday party season in full swing, we’ve got so many good friends coming through town, and it’s been the absolute best, so brace yourself for a lot of “dinner with friends” mentions below. As an aside, I’ve been wanting to start writing posts like this on the site that feel a bit more Substack-y, if you will, without the unbearable ordeal that is launching a new platform and keeping that up in addition to this website and all other social media. I love the casual format of Substack and figured I might as well work with what I’ve already got :-) Anyway, I wanted to talk through a bit of what I’ve been reaching for lately and share some of the details on a few of my favorite vintage—and newer—pieces for cooler days. One more thing: if you tap on the day of the week for each post, it will take you to a page with similar pieces if what I’m wearing is vintage/no longer made. I hope you enjoy!
Monday: Working from home + ERRANDS + Dinner with friends
My rules for black Friday shopping are simple: I can knock out whatever gift purchases I want to make for friends and family, but I can only buy 2-3 things for myself so long as they were something I already wanted, also—especially—if they sold out earlier in the year and are back in stock on some insane discount. My first sale purchase was this rugby shirt, and I’m so glad I got it: it’s incredibly easy to wear, comfortable and lightweight, and it’s great quality. For the rest of the outfit: vintage Levis—these are super similar—a vintage belt thrifted in Portland, some black patent loafers, and the suede bucket bag that showed up on our doorstep last winter, addressed to my husband with no return address. (??) We’ve asked everyone we know if they sent it to us and no one’s ever confessed: if you’re reading this somewhere out there, mystery gifter, thank you, we love it. Lastly, the scarf on the bag is an Hermès Twilly!
Tuesday: Errands & shoot planning at home
A Boat & Tote looks better with a little character, says the girl who cannot keep an ecru-colored accessory clean for more than a week. I found this amazing vintage LL Bean sweater on eBay and had it on my watchlist for over a year: I recently pulled the trigger and then had it hemmed a bit. I’m seeing a better selection on Etsy atm if you’re in the market. My second black Friday purchase was this denim mini skirt which I’ve already worn four or five times—a classic and fairly seasonless staple if you add tights! Lastly, I’ve got my Gardana clogs (one of my favorite shoe additions of the last year: so comfortable I forget I’m wearing them, and despite being a touch big at first, they fit perfectly with the addition of an insole.)
Wednesday: Recipe testing at home + dinner with friends
A couple more eBay wins: this vintage LL Bean chore coat (which I may have found for my husband with the intent of borrowing often) and a vintage 90s-ish school uniform skirt. This knit pullover is from Sezane—I want to say last winter—and the bag is from their current collection. For jewelry, I made this updated list of my staple pieces (plus more that are on my wishlist.)
Thursday: Errands + dinner with friends
Another friend made it to town so off we went to dinner at a new spot, Bar Siesta. I hit repeat on the mini skirt, loafers, and the bag. The sweater is from Arket, which tragically doesn’t ship to the U.S.: I found it on eBay and ordered it through a seller in Canada!
Friday: Holiday Party at the Paramour Estate
Every year, our friends’ design studio throws a stunning black-tie holiday party at some of the most iconic LA establishments, and it’s the night of the year each time without fail. I broke out my vintage 70s party dress and went with this little red bag from J. Crew, then tied it all together with some last-minute Zara heels.
Friday: After-party outfit change (lol)
I was suffocating in the previous dress due to it being lined and not even mildly breathable, so I stopped home on the way to the after-party to throw this on (pictured at a later date, haha). My best friend has the same one and I loved it so much I had to get one off The Real Real—the brand is ROTATE Birger Christensen in case the one I linked sells any time soon. It’s the most flattering dress and I still think I’ll order another in a different print/fabric for more frequent wearability since this one is sheer and has a slight sparkle.
Saturday: DRinks with friends
In full transparency…I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to wear a legging with a tall riding boot since 2011: this look was all I saved on Pinterest during my freshman and sophomore years of high school. With the recent chilly nights and my persisting love for showing up places without a reservation, I’ve found this to be the coziest and chicest late-night drinks look when I’m sent off to the patio tables. Also, this coat is one of my all-time vintage finds: I saw it in a vintage shop here in LA for $570 then searched for it on eBay—I ended up finding the same one for $50. (!)
Sunday: Tennis
Vintage Nike tennis and workout clothes in general are too good: nothing new compares in my opinion. Please do yourself a favor and get lost in the rabbit hole that is vintage Nike on Ebay, Depop, Etsy, etc!
Thanks for reading! More soon. <3
