12 environmentally-friendly brands

With warmer days quickly approaching, it might just be time to update some of your swimwear for those trips to the coast, days at the river and afternoons spent lounging by the pool: we’ve rounded up a handful of our favorite sustainably-made swimsuits varying in price points and sizing options. These suits have an emphasis on timelessness and quality materials so you’re able to keep rewearing your suits year after year.

MARA HOFFMAN | $70+ | SIZE XS-3X

Mara Hoffman aims to design her pieces with great care: their main goals are to reduce impact on the planet, generate awareness of the fashion industry’s responsibility in climate justice and to ask their customers to hold them accountable and join them in taking action. Mara Hoffman’s pieces are made to last so you can own fewer, better items in the long tern. They generally have items on sale directly on their website as well as Shopbop and The Outnet. Shop all.

L Space Swim | $99-198 | XS-XL

L Space carries an eco-friendly line, made from 100% recycled materials. They have dozens of silhouettes, patterns and colors, as well as one and two-pieces to choose from.

Alohas | $45+ | size S-L

Alohas offers sustainably made suits that are sourced and produced locally to ensure fair and sustainable conditions, quality standards, as well as a reduced carbon footprint.

Los Angeles Apparel | $32-$65 | size XS-XL

LA Apparel offers bikinis and one pieces, all made ethically in the U.S., supporting domestic farmers and the yarn industry. You’ll find ribbed styles, high cut shimmery suits and retro tri-color options online. Nearly 100% of their production and shipping byproducts are recycled.

GALAMAAR | $50-$276 | Size XS-XL

Galamaar makes environmentally-friendly swimwear in Los Angeles using sustainable fabrics via discarded fishing nets. We love this 1970s-inspired print on their Simone Retro Top.

Girlfriend | $38-$78 | size XXS-6XL

Girlfriend offers an array of separates and one pieces in muted earth tones. They’re made from recycled fishing nets and post-industrial waste recovered from the ocean and your purchase gives back 1% to Healthy Seas.

Aerie Real Good Swim | $10-$60 | Size XXS-XXL

Aerie offers a wide range of prints and styles like one pieces, high rise bottoms, ruffled tops, ribbed and tie-waist swimsuits. Their Real Good line is made from 80% recycled nylon via leftover fiber scraps. You’ll find some excellent sale prices, making some of the pieces as affordable as $10.

Overall, Aerie is not the most ethical or sustainable option out there, but they do list their efforts and initiatives which are in line with the Paris Climate Agreement.

Cuup | $68-$98 | Size XS-3XL + 30A-42H

Cuup offers an array of bikini bottoms, vintage-inspired high waisted bottoms and three different swim top styles ranging from size 30A-42H. They’re made of ECONYL®, a high-performance regenerated nylon which is created using recycled fishing nets pulled straight from the sea, along with discarded carpet and pre and post-consumer waste. Cuup does not state where they produce their garments or if their factory works earn a living wage, so we can’t deem this option ethically made, though it is sustainably made.

Andie | $34-$125 | Size xs-3xl

Andie offers an array of one and two-pieces as well as suits specifically designed for longer torsos. They use an eco fabric in some of their suits: it’s made from recycled polyester milled from post-consumer plastic bottles. Sale prices start at $34.

Boden | $38-$120 | Size 2-22

For chic and eco-friendly swimwear designed in the UK, Boden is a lovely brand to check out. With many styles ranging from size 2-22, their suits are made from ECONYL® regenerated fabric. Boden guarantees its suits will last and offers a 365-day return policy (for exchange or store credit) which really highlights the longevity of their suits.

Summersalt | $18-$101 | Size 2-22

Summersalt took over 1.5 million body measurements from 10,000 women to inform the ideal swimwear fit, and they use recycled materials to create fabrics and product packaging. They offer seemingly endless options— you can mix and match bikinis, opt for one-pieces and cover-ups, wrap skirts, loungewear, and more.

Vitamin A | $54-$265 | Size 4-14

Vitamin A offers a variety of one-pieces and two-piece sets, ranging from size 4 to 14. They’re made from a blend of recycled nylon and Lycra and all products come in biodegradable and recyclable packaging. Read more about their commitments here.

We hope you enjoyed this post and successfully found a few new swimwear options for summer that fit your sizing needs while remaining durable and environmentally friendly!
