Ethically and sustainably-made boot options

Much like the chunky black flip flop of the Summer, we see the chunky black boot emerge for Winter wear via Bottega Veneta. We enjoy this 90’s-inspired trend quite a bit and have been on the lookout for the perfect pair. In this article, you’ll find a lineup of sustainable boot options in the $200-$500 price range. *Updated in September 2023.

COS — CHUNKY LEATHER ANKLE CHELSEA BOOTS | $285

While COS is not the most sustainable option available, they're making moves to use 100% recycled, repurposed and sustainable materials by 2030. You can read more on their current goals here. These boots appear to be a quality swap and if cared for properly, they’ll last for ages and have a long lifecycle— staying out of the landfill and getting optimum wear.

VAGABOND — COSMO 2.0 | $265

We love the Vagabond Cosmo Boot as pictured on Christie Tyler. This boot comes across as the best swap for the Bottega boot, style-wise. Vagabond is committed to sustainable practices including materials, processing chemicals and emissions, as well as ethical labor, which you can read more about here.

ALOHAS — ARMOR BLACK CHUNK BOOT | $210

Alohas makes lovely leather shoes of all styles, and they offer a responsible purchasing option via on-demand shopping to help gauge sales and produce appropriate quantities. Their shoes are locally produced in Alicante, Spain.

ALOHAS — PEAK BLACK ZIPPER BOOT | $242

We’ve got another pair from Alohas, also offered on pre-order.

AEYDĒ — SIMONE LEATHER CHELSEA BOOT | $515 | SHOP

Aeydē's creations are a minimalist's dream. While not the chunkiest option, this is a beautifully timeless pair of tall Chelsea boots. Made in family-owned factories in Italy from soft leather, SIMONE is the brand’s toughened take on the Chelsea boot. This hardwearing ankle boot is made finest quality leathers, a sustainably-sourced byproduct of the food industry, and features a heavy rubber sole for non-slip grip. Available in supple calf leather and waterproof polido.

ALOHAS — KATIUSKA BLACK BOOT | $290

This option from Alohas is more of a knee-high style, though it most certainly comes through as the chunkiest boot. Alohas makes lovely leather shoes of all styles, and they offer a responsible purchasing option via on-demand shopping to help gauge sales and produce appropriate quantities. Their shoes are locally produced in Alicante, Spain.

We hope that you enjoyed this post and found a few new mindfully crafted footwear brands to support in the process.
