How to make a customized Ikea Besta sideboard

Hello! Over the last month or so, we’ve had all of the pieces come in for our sideboard, and it’s finally finished. It looks beautiful and I’d truly never guess that it started as an Ikea piece. All said and done it costs under $800 to make which was pretty great in comparison to the other credenzas I was seeing online in similar sizes: they were generally double (if not triple) the price.

We went with the 70” sideboard to go underneath the tv (65”), and it’s a very proportionate combination. In front of the unit is the blush bumper ottoman by Blu Dot. The tray on the ottoman is from Hay and the rug here is 5x7, for reference.

Let’s dive in to the pieces you’ll need to make your own.

One — $100

First, you’ll need your Ikea Besta base. We liked the look of the longer and thinner sideboard. Shipping was $50, but you can skip that expense if your city’s Ikea offers curbside pick-up.

Two — $72

Next, you’ll need your hinges. We got three sets since our unit has three cubbies: each set comes with two hinges per door.

Three — $317

Third, you’ll need your doors. We went with three white Quarterline doors from Semihandmade.

Fair warning, the Semihandmade website is pretty challenging to navigate, so best of luck. Here’s the Besta product page. Each door was $95 and shipping was $35, totalling $317.

Four — $200

Next, you’ll need your legs. We got eight birch balls from Superfront which were $25 each.

Five — $37

Lastly, you’ll need your handles or pulls. We got three of the birch balls, also from Superfront. These are about $12.40 each. Shipping was around $50, so at the end of the day you’ll spend around $287 at Superfront if you also get the legs there. We drilled these in about 4” from the top of the door.

Shop other drawer pulls from Semihandmade. Shop handles from Superfront.

I hope that this post was helpful in the quest to make your own relatively affordable, customized Ikea sideboard. Good luck!
