Easy Plastic-Free Switches

I set several goals for myself going into 2019 for more considered ways of living: focusing on reducing my paper/plastic waste, shopping in bulk (taking things home in jars or reusable cloth bags) instead of purchasing single-use bags of grains, flours, etc., and creating some at-home solutions for products that I’d regularly purchase. If you’re looking to make some simple but impactful changes in your daily life, here’s what I’ve found to be easiest to implement.

01 — Unpaper Towels

Unpaper towels are a durable (and cost-effective) swap: you’re able to bleach them (my favorite home and planet-friendly bleach is from Seventh Generation) before tossing them in the wash and reusing them for years to come. Buy a couple of rolls and reserve some for smaller messes so stains are less prevalent while they’re on display.

02 — Bulk Shopping

If you already have some mason jars or reusable bags: perfect. If not, it’s easy enough to grab some at the store or on websites like Package Free. You can purchase flours, nuts, rices, spices, seasonings and oils in bulk at your local co-ops and other health food stores.

03 — Personal care products

Consider recyclable and/or plastic-free packaged bath and body products. You can find zero-waste lip balm, shaving bars, sea sponges and loofas from Package Free. Another option is to create your own products— think hand sanitizer, shampoo, conditioner, dry shampoo, and so on.

There’s so much more to be found on Package Free: items for your pets, a range of haircare and oral care products, home cleaning essentials, makeup, candles, kitchenwares… the list goes on. We hope this has been a helpful thought-starter on making attainable switches to planet-friendly items in your day-to-day life.
