Some good news and outreach ideas
Hello! It has been — quite possibly — the longest week of all time, and we’re all trying to adjust to the changes being made on a daily basis. It’s a turbulent time and we need to look out for each other (and ourselves) as best we can. Let’s get into some good news, ways to support others and stay educated, accompanied by some pleasant film photos taken over the last year.
Stay informed
I’m educating myself with videos from Youtube channels like TED-Ed, KCETOnline, Vox and Vice News. These channels double as amazing places to learn more about the world around us and access full coverage on global issues.
Journal for a bit each day
Create bullet lists, get general feelings down on paper, record ideas and things to be thankful for. This is good for morale and really clears your head in a time of uncertainty. I’ve found this to be more helpful than I could have imagined.
Exercise and Stretch
There are tons of audio and video guides for at-home workouts out there (I like ClassPass and Youtube these days) and even if you’re not feeling it at first, start small by committing to a few days a week and go from there. It becomes easier if you allow yourself to commit to what you know you can do, and if you schedule even 30 minutes into your calendar, you’ll be more likely to execute.
Get outside
If you live somewhere with access to nature, get in the car and go picnic in a field, go for a hike, visit the coast. Take a camera with you, find something beautiful. As long as you’re practicing social distancing and hand-sanitizing often, you can still enjoy the outdoors. If you’re in an area that’s enacted shelter-where-you-are, you can open up your windows first thing in the morning, enjoy your patio, balcony or front yard, or walk to the grocery store for essentials.
Support others
Find ways that work for you to help out small businesses and organizations in your area. It’s encouraging to come together with your community and help whoever you can when you can. Here’s a great resource with ideas for Portlanders. I also saved a bunch of small businesses that you can purchase gift cards or make online orders from in my Instagram Stories. It’s about halfway through my Portland II Highlight.
Take a picture every day
Capture something that you find beautiful once a day: remind yourself of things that cheer you up. Find beauty in simplicity.
