When to try and where to find it

Every cell in the body needs magnesium to function and around 50% of us are deficient: it plays many crucial roles like supporting muscle and nerve function, as well as energy production. Nuts, seeds, whole grains, beans, leafy vegetables, milk, yogurt and fortified foods are excellent sources of magnesium, and you’ll likely reach the optimal amount needed by upping your daily intake of foods like these. For instance, one ounce of almonds contains 20% of the daily magnesium an adult needs: even water (tap, mineral or bottled) can provide magnesium.

Perhaps you’ve seen magnesium praised for its’ benefits surrounding sleep: one study of older adults with insomnia found that magnesium supplementation at a dose of 500 milligrams daily for eight weeks helped them fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, reduced nighttime awakenings, and increased their levels of naturally circulating melatonin.

As far as PMS goes: if you have symptoms like bloating, fluid retention, and tenderness in your breasts, you might benefit from taking about 360 mg of magnesium a day, but there’s no guarantee it will help. Some research has shown it’s beneficial, while some has not.
