A recent report by the World Resources Institute confirmed that halving the rate of food loss and waste is an important strategy that would contribute to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals, meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change, and sustainably feeding the planet by 2050.
Part of achieving the goal of zero world hunger is preventing food loss. The WFP does this by helping smallholder farmers through the provision of new technologies for storage and transportation that prevent crops from spoiling prematurely and by connecting them with markets.

When you save your leftovers, leave a note on the fridge with what you just added to the fridge with the date next to it. Ideally, this will help you remember to finish leftovers before they go bad or before you consider making something else. Here is our favorite option for food storage.
One
Consider learning to make some things you’d generally buy in packaging and learn to store food for longevity: pickle some cucumbers, onions and carrots for sandwiches/salads. Make your own condiments, improve methods for storing greens in an effort to keep them fresher longer. This is a great chance to use basic household goods to create what you need and make food last.
Two
Keep a written menu of the meals you plan to make each week so you remember what you bought specific ingredients for. We’ll often forget about things and let them go bag because they don’t have a specific purpose, but keeping a written list with each day of the week can be really helpful.
Three
When you get home from the store, take the time to wash, dry, chop and add your fresh foods to storage containers for snacks and easy prep for cooking. This can eliminate future prep time and make cooking seem less daunting.
Four
Freeze produce as soon as you realize that you won’t end up using it as originally planned, and you’ll be able to pull it out and make the recipe you had in mind weeks or months later, and you won’t have to repurchase the same items.
We hope that these tips help you our on your journey in reducing your food waste!
